Happiness Deconstructed Part 4: Meaning

Do you ever feel like everyday is the same? Like you’re going through the motions but not truly feeling fulfilled? You might be lacking the connection between you and your sense of meaning. This is a huge contributor to happiness in the PERMA-V model we talk about in positive psychology. In order to feel fulfilled we must believe that our life has meaning, that our efforts have meaning, and that our goals have meaning. Many clients come to me asking how they can create more meaning in their lives, so let me share with you a bit about how to do just that.

Let's begin with your values. All of my clients begin their journey by learning their top strengths as well as their core values. These act as your guiding principles moving forward, they will help you line up the right job, the right relationships, the right lifestyle to support your goals. You will also use your values to determine whether or not you are living a meaningful life.

First I want you to ask yourself:

* "What does a meaningful life look like to me?"

* "What matters most to me?"

* "When do I feel most alive and connected with purpose?"

Think about it this way, if you were to fast forward 10 years, look back and think "Wow, I have been living an incredibly meaningful life", what would that mean to you? Who would you have spent time with? What activities would you have been doing? Which activities would you have said no to? How would have earned and spent your money? What would you have created with your time and resources?

As with most things, a truly meaningful life lies in the eye of the beholder. Personally, my purpose is to walk my talk, to inspire those around me to believe that they can be who they want to be and live the lives they desire. A meaningful life to me is one where my time is well spent and managed, my needs are balanced with the needs of others, I am present in my daily life, I am kind, caring, authentic.
